The perfect way to welcome sunshine and good weather is with a spring detox diet. You will feel refreshed and energized rather than hungry or stressed. Some detox diets can be extreme and may lead to some nutritional deficiencies or can trigger unhealthy eating patterns especially in teenagers.
There is no evidence to support the need for a detox diet, but good consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables is beneficial for our health.
Spring Detox diet plan-easy steps:
Keeping hydrated – drinking plenty of water starting first thing in the morning before breakfast can go a long way in flushing toxins, aim to drink eight glasses a day. Nettle tea will also enhance the detoxing effects.
Self care – it is about taking better care of your body and mind such as by improving your sleep or try out new stress-management techniques
Eat locally – grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Try a salad, smoothies and soups and use fresh herbs like parsley, basil and dill.
Enjoy balanced meals with protein, whole grain carbs and fresh vegetables and fruits. Try to include all three groups of food in each of your meals.
Use variety of vegetables, such as kale, carrot, onions, beets, artichokes. Add pulses, avocado and sweet potato. Eat oily fish such as salmon and sardines.
Breakfast is the most important meal of a day. Try oatmeal, fresh smoothies and chia pudding. You can add some locally produced cold pressed honey with propolis too.
Avoid alcohol which is metabolized in the body mainly by the liver. It is broken down to acetaldehyde, a chemical that can damage liver cells before it is eliminated from the body.
Physical activity will boost circulation and help your body to eliminate toxins. You can try going for a walk during your lunch break or take part in some yoga classes. It is good to break your exercise sessions into short intervals.
To stimulate your digestive system, try drinking herbal tea like peppermint, camomile or ginger. If you have any concerns about making changes in your diet and lifestyle consult your nutritionist to determine whether is this right for you.
Are there any dangers with detox diets?
If you cut out specific food groups, you could be depriving yourself of essential nutrients. The best way to make any change in your diet is to consult a nutritional professional and do it together, rather than potentially missing out on a lot of essential nutrients.
