FOODS TO EAT WHEN FIGHTING THE FLU
We all heard the saying “Feed a cold, starve a fever”, however, the healing power of nourishment and energy through foods is vital when you are battling a gastro virus or a flu in order to boost your immunity and give your body the energy it needs to fight off illness, especially if you are dealing with flu symptoms for few days or even weeks.
Chicken soup
Steaming bowl of chicken soup is comforting at time when you are not feeling well. It contains vitamins, nourishment, minerals and will hydrate you too.
According to research from Mount Sinai Miami, chicken soup has the ability to improve air flow and flush out mucus in the nasal passages. The Research also found that chicken soup has anti-inflammatory properties which boost the tiny hair-like follicles in your nasal passages. These stop viruses, fungus and bacteria from entering the body.
Ginger
There’s a reason why ginger tea is recommended by your doctor for calming upset stomach. Ginger root has powerful inflammation-fighting properties. It can help individuals with osteoarthritis to reduce pain and inflammation.
Banana
Bananas are also at the top of the list, often prescribed for those battling the cold or flu because they provide energy, but are gentle on the upset stomach. They are high in vitamin B6, which provides energy, lowers stress and helps you get a good night sleep.
Garlic
This powerful anti-viral, anti-bacterial and immune-boosting bulb will rev up your flu-fighting powers while relieving mucus congestion. Study conducted by European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism linked garlic extract supplementation to improved immune cell function and reduction of cold and flu symptoms.
Green and Black Teas
Research by U. S. National Institutes of Health shows that drinking green and black teas while fighting a cold can ease congestion, dilute mucus and boost immunity thanks to amazing germ-fighting antioxidant catechin and theanine.
Fruit and Vegetable Juices
Eating lots of fruits and vegetables isn’t likely when you are battling bad tummy or a cold because our appetite suffers when we are sick. Juicing you own drink from 2 to 3 different fruits and vegetables will keep you hydrated without stuffing yourself full of food on a poor appetite, and ensure you stay charged with a variety of vitamins and minerals needed to fight off illness.
